Speeders Could Lose Vehicles PDF Print E-mail

As the last long weekend of the summer begins, police are warning drivers to take it easy on the highways.  And soon government will increase speeding deterrents. 
Starting September 20, if a driver is caught going more than 40 kilometres an hour over the speed limit, their vehicle will be impounded for seven days.
If you're caught again, the vehicle will be taken for 30 days and 60 days for drivers who are caught for a third or more times within a two year period.
BC's Solicitor General Mike de Jong says the new rules are going in because excessive speed can be a death sentence.

It's the "Share a Little Magic" month for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Prince George.
The agency is in need of volunteers with 15 boys and four girls on the wait list for mentors. Executive Director, Jamie Kranrod says there are varying levels of commitment ranging from one hour a week to four hours.   Big Brothers, Big Sisters has been working in this community for over 30 years.

A Prince George woman will be cycling across Canada in the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride. Fifty six year old Peggy Tobin will start on September 9th in Vancouver.  She will ride with forty one others riders and set out for the seven thousand kilometre ride.  Tobin has been training for several months in hopes to raise money to help children that have been touched by cancer. The money raised will go toward child oncology centers across Canada.

The Northern Cancer Centre isn't slated to open until the end of 2012, but its first physician has already been hired. Dr. Robert Olson, a radiation oncologist, will be part of the provincial Radiation Therapy Program which will bring service to the north for the first time when the centre is opened.   He has also been appointed as an assistant professor with the Northern Medical Program through the Department of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC.  His academic responsibilities within the NMP will be teaching and research.

Prince George RCMP have executed a search warrant at an Oak Street house they say is associated to the gang "Game Tight Soldiers." Police say they encountered a heavily-barricaded front door when serving a warrant in the 2200 block of Oak Street late Wednesday afternoon, but managed to get in through a sliding glass door. They found crack cocaine, cash and drug paraphernalia. Three men and a woman were arrested. Another drug bust and a murder occurred on Oak Street in the last three weeks.

Theatre North West is scoffing at the latest arts funding announcement from the province. Just weeks after the resignation of the head of the BC Arts Council, the government is handing over what they call an extra seven million dollars in funding. But officials with Theatre North West say it isn't new money.

Just weeks after the resignation of the head of the BC Arts Council, Jane Danzo, the province is handing over what it calls an extra seven million dollars in funding. But officials with Theatre North West in Prince George say it's dollars that have already been announced. Back in March the government announced 10 million in funding for arts through the 2010 Sports and Arts Legacy program. It then implemented 3 million of that budget and Theatre North West officials say this is the remaining 7 million. All of this comes after the budget for the BC Arts Council was cut by 52 percent and the gaming grants were removed in the last year.

Carney Hill will be starting up next week as British Columbia's first aboriginal school.  The idea has been in the works for more than a decade.   Ben Berland with the Aboriginal Board of Education says there is one major challenge.  The school has been developed as a strategy to develop more successful education outcomes for aboriginal students who have low graduation levels traditionally.  Berland says the eyes of the province and the nation will be watching to see how the school makes out.

One of the three collared bears has dropped her GPS collar, which is what allowed biologists to track the bear in an urban area.  Trapping a new bear will start this week in the College Heights area. If you see a bear trap, leave the way you came and do not approach the trap. This year there have been 800 bear complaints and 30 bears destroyed.

Another delegation representing business and government are heading to China tomorrow. They are pursuing plans to twin with the city of Jiangmen, and to extend an invitation for a return visit from that community. Mayor Dan Rogers is taking part in the trip and says the City has plenty to offer.

In one week students will be back in class. As the new school year gets underway, parents are out shopping for school supplies. Many items on school supply lists are impacted by the HST. Tracey Hannam with SpeeDee says some schools and teachers made bulk purchases before the tax was implemented. Items which previously has no PST... such as paper, pencils and pens are now charged HST. That's a tax jump from 5 percent up to 12.

The University of Northern BC will be receiving 230 thousand dollars to provide training to students in the north.  It's part a 5 point 2 million dollars in province-wide funding announced today by the BC Ministry of Advanced Education.  UNBC is expected to use the funds to offer a G.I.S. course and a Project Management course.  The programming is intended for unemployed and low skilled British Columbians.

The Prince George Cougars will host a CHL Subway Series game November 18th.  The game will feature a squad of Western Hockey League All-Stars and the Russian National Junior team.  The contest will be the final game in the cross-Canada series between the Russians and Canadian Hockey League players.  All six games will be broadcast nationally.  Cougar season ticket holders will be able to purchase tickets to the game beginning Saturday morning at 10:00.

A new school year is just a week away in B.C.  Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid says one of the highlights is the move to all-day Kindergarten in half the province, including School District 57.  Over 21 thousand students will be enrolled in the program this year.  A year from now when the program is extended province-wide, 40,000 students are expected.  MacDiarmid says the province has the teachers and the space to be able to provide the all-day Kindergarten program.
