The University of Northern BC will be receiving 230 thousand dollars to provide training to students in the north. It's part a 5 point 2 million dollars in province-wide funding announced today by the BC Ministry of Advanced Education. UNBC is expected to use the funds to offer a G.I.S. course and a Project Management course. The programming is intended for unemployed and low skilled British Columbians.

The Prince George Cougars will host a CHL Subway Series game November 18th. The game will feature a squad of Western Hockey League All-Stars and the Russian National Junior team. The contest will be the final game in the cross-Canada series between the Russians and Canadian Hockey League players. All six games will be broadcast nationally. Cougar season ticket holders will be able to purchase tickets to the game beginning Saturday morning at 10:00.

A new school year is just a week away in B.C. Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid says one of the highlights is the move to all-day Kindergarten in half the province, including School District 57. Over 21 thousand students will be enrolled in the program this year. A year from now when the program is extended province-wide, 40,000 students are expected. MacDiarmid says the province has the teachers and the space to be able to provide the all-day Kindergarten program.

The Community Working Group overlooking rehabilitation efforts says the province can not put recovery efforts on hold any longer. It wants the province to build a hatchery in Vanderhoof. The group has secured $40,000 in education and communication funding this year from the District of Vanderhoof, Environment Canada and Integris Credit Union. It's thought there are fewer than 450 mature sturgeon remaining.

The future of rural schools in BC was a hot topic today. The Education Minister held a telephone conference and took some heat over rural education. The Minister did admit that government is looking at ways to help those smaller schools, but for now, the future of rural schools seems to be in peril.

Schools within District 57 resume operations a week from tomorrow. While most students are already registered, Superintendent Brian Pepper says anyone who is new to the area or has moved from one part of the city to another and is switching schools, will need to register. Pepper says parents are required to bring a birth certificate for their proof of age. Elementary students can register at their new school until three this afternoon. Secondary students can register this week. Registration dates vary for individual schools. Full details are listed below:

Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid says the provincial government is committed to funding school districts that have several rurals schools, but says the problem comes down to enrolment numbers.
Margaret MacDiarmid says that problem is particularly acute in School District 57, where enrolment has gone down by about 25 percent. She says the district has 4-thousand-500 fewer students now than in 2000.
MacDiarmid says the funding has remained the same and overall is up 32 percent on a funding-per-pupil basis. She says one of the things the government is looking at is neighbourhood learning centres, in which schools are used in off hours for such things as daycare centres and other community purposes.

The Regional District is expected to select an individual to represent the Bear Lake Community Commission at it's Board meetings. The vacancy was created with the passing of former commissioner Ed Gronning earlier this summer. No one offered their name as a candidate for a by-election. A report is expected to go before the board during it's September 16th meeting.

The Community Working Group overlooking efforts to save the Nechako White Sturgeon says the provincial government has put its rehabilitation efforts on hold. So now it's reaching out to seek support elsewhere. It's received twenty thousand dollars from the District of Vanderhoof, nearly seventeen thousand dollars from Environment Canada and twenty-five hundred dollars from Integris Credit Union. The forty thousand dollars will help educate and communicate the needs of the endangered fish, however the group says it needs the province to build a hatchery in Vanderhoof. It's estimated less than 450 mature fish remain in the Nechako river.

This part of the province is blessed with an abundance of water, but organizers of the two-day event say we often take water for granted.

The Prince George Fire Department was called out to a fire in the 200 block of Gillette street Saturday night. Once on the scene fire fighters found flames coming out of the balcony of the top unit. The occupants made it out safely and the fire was quickly extinguished. Damaged is estimated at 50 thousand dollars. Investigators were back on the scene Sunday trying to determine the cause.

Members of the Crime Reduction Team, Drug Task Force and the Downtown Enforcement Unit teamed up to take down a house in the 11-hundred block of Chilako Avenue Friday night. Police entered the home with a search warrant and say the home owner was among the five males and one female arrested. They say the drug house became known to them through tips from the public.

Two to four million dollars is being spent each day to fight wildfires in BC. Over 400 fire fighters are still battling the Pelican Complex Fire. The current bill is 170 million dollars, which is well over the 52 million that was budgeted. Forests Minister Pat Bell says there was no way prevent what happened this year.

Anti-HST supporters continue to push the BC Liberals to dump the tax. Local Fight HST activists met with Prince George MLA's today and while the meeting was respectful the two sides have basically agreed to disagree.

Prince George RCMP have made another drug and weapons bust.
Around 11pm Friday police executed a search warrant at a suspected rug house in the 1100 block Chilako Avenue. They found what they're calling a substantial amount of cocaine, cash, drug gear and a high-powered rifle reported stolen in a break and enter last week.
Police arrested 5 males and one female. They say the owner and one of the males were already on court release for other offences.

Local anti-HST representatives met with MLAs Shirley Bond and Pat Bell this morning.
Local anti-HST Captain Eric Allen says they've agreed to disagree. The anti forces want the tax rescinded. Allen says they will also look at recall action.
Meantime Shirley Bond says the government did a poor job in introducing the tax. However she says there are benefits in terms of competitiveness and job creation.
Anti-HST petitioners collected 14-thousand 7-hundred signatures for the Prince George-Mackenzie and Prince George-Valemount ridings. A rally is planned for September 25th.

UNBC will play host to a water symposium today, in conjunction with U-Vic and UBC-Okanagan. The conference is expected to identify current water uses and explore ways to improve on those uses. Results will work toward creating a BC Water Science Strategy, as part of a provincial plan for water security.
