The Northern Bear Awareness Program has been hit by provincial funding cuts. Society President Sandra Nahornoff says she's disappointed because this region is one of the major bear problem areas in the province, with the highest number of bears destroyed.
Nahornoff says they're surviving on funding from local supporters. The society has a bear study program underway, radio-collaring five bears to watch their movement and how they utilize corridors. The society will go before city council June 29th, proposing the city commit to achieving provincial "bear smart" status.
